This course is intended for students that have a basic understanding of pedagogy and the foundations of teaching who currently possess a California Teaching Credential. This course addresses an overview of the educational principles and practices for identifying and teaching diverse learners with mild to moderate disabilities, the development of curriculum, and the design of instructional strategies to use in classrooms. The course presents historical factors and current issues relating to public policy, service delivery and research-based instructional strategies. The interns in this course will explore policy and procedures pertinent to the special education system in terms of standardized assessment, placement, professional ethics, and student placement. It will also explore current laws and compliance requirements as they relate to children and youth including students with disabilities and those who are English learners at any level. In this class, interns will develop curriculum and design instructional strategies to use in their classrooms. A focus will be on developing curriculum that provides reasonable accommodations to children with disabilities and those who are learning English. There will be a focus on research-based approaches for designing, adapting, prescribing, and delivering instruction in content areas. Students will engage in progress monitoring. Relevant standards will be used when designing and using standards-based, individualized instruction that is appropriate and systematic for all students who have special needs, including students with cultural, linguistic socio-economic, gender and sexual orientation diversity considerations. Interns will access the general education curriculum to support all students to actively participate in lessons with the necessary supports, services and adaptations required for each student.
