Course Description

This course begins with an overview of typical child development through early adolescence and the issues that present in
instruction. Throughout the course, candidates will learn about atypical development and the impact on education. Within the
education system, candidates will encounter children who have physical and/or brain injuries as well as those who may have
sensory impairments. Strategies will be discussed so that those children can access the general education curriculum to the
extent possible. Candidates will also learn strategies and accommodations/modifications for working with children with serious
medical issues and working with families. Course content includes medical and health problems evolving from perinatal
developmental risk factors, and/or chronic medical conditions. Introduction to the medical team functions, interpretation of
medical histories; specialized medical equipment and feeding procedures; handling children with physical disabilities; family
reactions and coping strategies; and community resources are addressed. Candidates will learn about the federal, state and
local policies regarding working with specialized health care.
