Subject Matter Requirement

Course Evaluation Instructions

Please read instructions carefully and make sure you are following the outlined steps before submitting the SMR request.

Candidates earning their first special education credential need to meet the CSET requirement in order to be recommended for a Preliminary Education Specialist Credential. The CSEST exam requirement is applicable only to applicants applying for their first credential in the specializations of Mild Moderate (Mild Moderate Support Needs) or Moderate Severe (Extensive Support Needs) credential. Candidates who have not completed the exam have the option of requesting a course evaluation of their coursework completed during their undergraduate program. A course evaluation determines if a candidates prior undergraduate coursework meets the CSET exam requirements per TK-12 Education Trailer Bill (AB 130). The fee for a course evaluation is $225, due at the time of evaluation submission. Please read the instructions listed below carefully and follow them as outlined. To learn about all the options to meet the Subject Matter Requirement, please visit Subject Matter Requirements (CSET)

How to request course evaluation for CSET

  1. Determine if your degree coursework aligns with a single subject or multiple subjects within the CSET domains. This is relevant if your degree major does not have an exact match. For example, a bachelor's degree in Business meets the single subject CSET requirement for Business, but a bachelor's degree in Business Administration does not.

    • If you believe your coursework does not meet the single subject or multiple subject requirement, you are not required to complete the process. In that case, you can take the CSET for single subject or multiple subjects.

  2. Choose and download the fillable PDF for the appropriate subject listed. Alternatively, you can create a copy of the form as a Google Doc, fill out the form, and download that version for submission.

    • If your degree major is in elementary education and/or liberal arts, select the form listed under the "Multiple Subject" heading.

    • If your degree major is a single subject, select the appropriate subject form listed under the "Single Subject" heading. Choose only ONE subject for the course evaluation. New single subject documents will be updated on this page.

  3. Complete the PDF as instructed.

  4. Upload the completed PDF to your student portal under ‘My Files’ tab.

  5. Upload any course syllabi, course descriptors, and/or additional documents to your student portal under ‘My Files’ tab.

  6. Make sure to label files following this protocol: Degree Major-Course-Syllabus. For example, Business Administration-BA201-Syllabus.
